Summerland Healthy Community Initiative Blooms
By Melanie Willson
Spring is a time of growth, and the Summerland Healthy Community Initiative (SCHI) is certainly blooming. Through the fall they have gained new members, and clarified their vision that “Summerland will be a leading example of a healthy community”.
In February they facilitated a Philosopher’s Café with 40 attendees who were excited to talk about the status and vision of Summerland as a healthy community. Community members also completed surveys and gave feedback on a roving display through the winter. There were over 125 responses to help the SCHI members to complete their healthy community scan and identify possible future actions.
With strong support from the community and District of Summerland council, the SCHI has applied for a grant from PlanH to host a series of films and community conversations about health. They hope to use the films to spark projects to promote health in Summerland.
Stay tuned for more action and growth from this dynamic group in the near future. I have been fortunate to have a practicum placement with the SCHI since September, as part of my Master of Public Health with the University of Victoria. Though my practicum is ending, I am excited by the momentum and energy that this group has.
